Algoma is a small place in McDowell County, West Virginia, West Virginia, in the United States. It's called an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Algoma is right next to another community called Northfork.
Algoma used to have its own post office. It opened in 1891 but closed down in 1988. The name "Algoma" probably comes from the Algonquin language. This suggests a connection to Native American history in the area.
History of Algoma
A very important building in Algoma is the Algoma Coal and Coke Company Store. This store was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. Being on this list means the building is special and important to the history of the country. It helps us remember the past, especially the history of coal mining in West Virginia.
