His Early Life and Education

Āli Musliyār was born in 1861 in a place called Nellikkunattu desom. His parents were Kunhimoitīn Molla and Kōtakkal Āmina. His mother's family, the Maqdoom family of Ponnani, was well-known for their religious teachings.

Musliyār's grandfather, Mūsa, was one of the "Malappuram Martyrs." Āli Musliyār started his education by learning the Qur'an (the holy book of Islam). He also studied Tajwid (how to recite the Qur'an correctly) and the Malayalam language.

He then went to Ponnani Darse, a religious school, to study religion and philosophy for ten years. After that, he traveled to Mecca for more education. In Mecca, he learned from famous scholars.

After seven years in Mecca, he became the Chief Qasi (a judge who applies Islamic law) in Kavaratti, which is in the Laccadive Islands.

Role in the Khilafat Movement

In 1907, Āli Musliyār became the main religious leader at the mosque in Tirurangadi. He became a key figure in the Khilafat Movement. This movement supported the idea of an Islamic Caliphate, a religious and political leader for Muslims worldwide.

On August 22, 1921, he was named a leader of the Khilafat movement at the Jamat Mosque. He announced that certain taxes and fees should now go to the Khilafat Government.

Āli Musliyār was seen as a leader by many people. He held regular meetings where he spoke about the Khilafat movement. These speeches made many people believe that British rule in India would soon end.

He and his followers began to prepare for a direct stand against the colonial government. Volunteers were asked to promise to support the Khilafat cause. These volunteers would march in their uniforms, carrying flags, and shouting slogans. These demonstrations made the movement stronger.

The Uprising and Its End

There was also some disagreement between local people and the Pookotur Estate manager. This problem grew worse after the police searched the area. V. Mohammad used the Khilafat movement to express anger about these issues.

The uprising of 1921–22 began when police tried to arrest three leaders, including Āli Musliyār, on August 20, 1921. Rumors spread that the colonial government had damaged a mosque. This led to many people, estimated between 15,000 and 30,000, joining the uprising.

The uprising caused damage to government buildings, rail bridges, and roads. While colonial troops quickly gained control in many towns, some rebels continued to fight using guerilla tactics. This forced the government to send more soldiers.

The uprising ended in February 1922. Āli Musliyār was one of the leaders who were put on trial. He was later captured and died in Coimbatore Prison on February 17, 1922.

Remembering Āli Musliyār

Āli Musliyār's name is listed in the fifth volume of 'The Dictionary of Martyrs, India’s Freedom Struggle from 1857 to 1947'. This book lists people who died for India's freedom.

However, the Indian Council of Historical Research thought about removing his name and 386 others from the dictionary. This was because of their connection to the Khilafat Movement and actions during the uprising. But his name has not been removed from the list.
