Ali Shaheed Muhammad (born August 11, 1970) is an American musician. He is a disc jockey (DJ), a record producer (who helps make music), a rapper, and a bass guitar player. He is most famous for being a member of the hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest.
With his bandmates Q-Tip and Phife Dawg, and sometimes Jarobi White, A Tribe Called Quest released many popular albums. He was also part of the R&B group Lucy Pearl. More recently, he has worked on jazz music with producer Adrian Younge.
Early Life and Music Beginnings
Ali Shaheed Muhammad was born in Brooklyn, New York City. He grew up in a neighborhood called Bedford–Stuyvesant. He started being a DJ when he was just eight years old. By age 13, he was already learning how to create music using special equipment.
He met Q-Tip when they were in high school in Manhattan. In 1985, they began making demo songs together. Soon after, Phife Dawg and Jarobi White joined them. This is how the famous hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest was formed. Ali Shaheed Muhammad is a Muslim.
Music Career Highlights
Ali Shaheed Muhammad, along with Jay Dee and Q-Tip, created a music production team called the Ummah. They worked on many songs together.
After A Tribe Called Quest stopped making music for a while, Muhammad formed a new R&B group called Lucy Pearl. He joined with Dawn Robinson from En Vogue and Raphael Saadiq from Tony! Toni! Toné!. They released one album in 2000. In 2004, he released his first solo album, called Shaheedullah and Stereotypes.
In 2013, Muhammad moved to Los Angeles. There, he started working with producer Adrian Younge. They worked on the album There Is Only Now for the group Souls of Mischief. Muhammad was the narrator for this album.
Since then, Muhammad and Younge have worked together on many projects. They created the music for both seasons of the Luke Cage TV show. They also tour together as a group called The Midnight Hour. They released an album with the same name.
In 2019, Muhammad helped with Raphael Saadiq's album, Jimmy Lee.
In 2020, Muhammad and Younge started a new music series called Jazz Is Dead. In this series, they work with famous jazz musicians. They have collaborated with artists like Roy Ayers and Marcos Valle. Muhammad plays the bass guitar for these projects.
In 2024, Ali Shaheed Muhammad was honored. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of A Tribe Called Quest.
Radio Show
From 2013 to 2019, Ali Shaheed Muhammad co-hosted a radio show called Microphone Check. It was first on NPR and later on Spotify.
