Ali Shaheed Muhammad (born Ali Jones, August 11, 1970) is an American DJ, music producer, rapper, and bass guitarist. He is most famous for being a member of the hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest. With his bandmates Q-Tip and Phife Dawg, and sometimes Jarobi White, the group released many popular albums.
Ali Shaheed Muhammad was also part of the R&B group Lucy Pearl. In recent years, he has become well-known for his jazz music projects with producer Adrian Younge.
Early Life and Starting Music
Ali Jones was born in Brooklyn, New York City, on August 11, 1970. He grew up in the Bedford–Stuyvesant area. He started being a DJ when he was only eight years old. By age 13, he was already learning how to create music.
When he was a freshman at Murry Bergtraum High School in Manhattan, he became friends with Q-Tip. In 1985, they began making demo songs together. Muhammad's uncle helped them by providing recording equipment. Soon after, Phife Dawg and Jarobi White joined them. This is how the famous hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest was formed. Ali Shaheed Muhammad is a Muslim.
Music Career
Ali Shaheed Muhammad, along with Jay Dee and Q-Tip, created a music production team called the Ummah. They produced music for many artists.
After A Tribe Called Quest stopped making music together for a while, Muhammad formed a new R&B group called Lucy Pearl. He joined with Dawn Robinson (from En Vogue) and Raphael Saadiq (from Tony! Toni! Toné!). They released one album in 2000. On October 12, 2004, Ali Shaheed Muhammad released his first solo album, called Shaheedullah and Stereotypes.
In 2013, Muhammad moved to Los Angeles. There, he started working with producer Adrian Younge. They worked on the Souls of Mischief album There Is Only Now, where Muhammad was the narrator. Since then, Muhammad and Younge have worked together on many projects. They created the music for both seasons of the Luke Cage TV show. They also started touring together as a group called The Midnight Hour, releasing an album with the same name in 2018.
In 2019, Muhammad helped with Raphael Saadiq's album, Jimmy Lee.
In 2020, Muhammad and Younge started a record label and album series called Jazz Is Dead. In this series, they work with famous jazz musicians to create new music. Some of the artists they have worked with include Roy Ayers, Marcos Valle, Doug Carn, and Gary Bartz. Muhammad is the main bass guitarist for these projects.
In 2024, Ali Shaheed Muhammad was honored by being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was recognized as a member of A Tribe Called Quest.
