Ali ibn Musa (Arabic: علي ابن موسى ), also known as Ar-Ridha, was a very important leader in Shia history. He was the eighth Imam, following his father Musa al-Kadhim and before his son Muhammad al-Jawad. People saw him as a wise and knowledgeable leader.
Ali ibn Musa lived during a challenging time for the Abbasid rulers. They faced many problems, including uprisings from Shia groups. The Caliph Al-Mamun tried to solve these issues by making Ali ibn Musa his successor. However, as the Imam became more popular, many Shia followers believe he was poisoned by the Caliph.
Ali ibn Musa was buried in a village in Khorasan. This village later became known as Mashhad, which means "place of martyrdom." Today, the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad is a very large and important place for pilgrims.

His burial place in Mashhad, Iran, became a very important holy site. Millions of people visit the Imam Reza shrine every year. It is a place for prayer, learning, and reflection.
Ali ibn Musa also shared his knowledge through writings. He wrote several important books that are still studied today. These books cover topics like religious law and wisdom.
