Alina Dumitru, born on August 30, 1982, is a famous judo athlete from Romania. She won a gold medal at the Olympic Games and has been a European champion many times. In 2008, she made history by becoming the first Romanian judoka to win an Olympic gold medal.

Alina Dumitru's Judo Journey

Early Life and Training

Alina Dumitru started her judo journey early. She trained hard with Romania's national judo team. Her coach, Florin Bercean, helped her become a top athlete.

Olympic Success in Beijing 2008

At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Alina Dumitru competed in the women's 48 kg judo event. She reached the semifinals, where she faced Ryoko Tani from Japan. Tani was a very strong opponent who had not lost in major international competitions for 12 years.

Alina surprised everyone by defeating Tani. She described this victory as "a dream." In the final match, she quickly beat Yanet Bermoy from Cuba in just 80 seconds. This amazing win earned Alina her first Olympic gold medal. It was also Romania's first-ever judo gold medal at the Summer Olympics.

London 2012 Olympic Medal

Alina Dumitru also competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. She had a tough quarter-final match against Mönkhbatyn Urantsetseg from Mongolia, but she won. In the semifinals, Alina faced Tomoko Fukumi, who was ranked number one in the world. Alina had lost to Fukumi four times before, but this time she won!

In the final match, Alina competed against Sarah Menezes from Brazil. She lost this match, earning a silver medal. This was Romania's first medal at the London Olympics. Alina Dumitru announced her retirement from judo in 2013.

Besides her Olympic medals, Alina Dumitru won many other awards.

  • She won nine medals at the European Judo Championships. Seven of these were gold medals, and two were silver.
  • She also earned three bronze medals at the World Judo Championships.

Alina Dumitru's achievements were recognized in Romania.

  • The president of Romania, Traian Băsescu, gave her the "Sportive Merit" Medal, Class I.
  • In 2008, she was named an "Honorary Citizen" of her hometown, Ploiești.
  • In 2012, she also received the title of Honorary Citizen of Cluj County.
