History of All Saints' Church
Building the Current Church
The church you see today was built a long time ago. Construction started in 1771 and finished in 1773. A very important person, Robert Hay Drummond, who was the Archbishop of York, officially opened it for worship.
The Older Church in Rempstone
Before the current church, there was an even older one. It was called St Peter in the Rushes. This older church stood about half a mile (1 kilometer) north-east of the current village. It was located near a stream called Sheepwash Brook. Next to it was a Manor House that is now a fishing lake. There was also a holy spring nearby.
Archaeologists, who are like history detectives, dug at the site between 1960 and 1962. They found the foundations of a tower from the 12th century. This means the old church was very ancient!
Materials from the Past
The builders of All Saints' Church used many materials from the old St Peter in the Rushes church. This helped to connect the new church to the long history of worship in Rempstone. About 20 old gravestones still mark the spot of the original churchyard. Over 950 burials took place there, including six former Rectors of Rempstone.
