A Look at All Saints' History

The story of All Saints Church goes back a long time.

Early Beginnings

In the 1200s, a man named Ralph de Ecclesall owned a mill. This mill was on the River Sheaf. He gave his mill to the monks at Beauchief Abbey. The money from the mill was used for a special purpose. It helped pay for a priest, called a canon. This priest would lead daily services in Ralph's chapel. These services continued for many years. They stopped when monasteries were closed down in the 1500s.

Restoration and Growth

The chapel was brought back to life in 1622. It became a "chapel of ease." This meant it was a smaller church for people living far from the main parish church in Sheffield. In the 1780s, a brand new chapel was built. It was very close to the old one. This new building opened on December 13, 1788. The old chapel was then taken down.

The new church building was made even better in 1843. It was made bigger in 1864. In 1845, the large parish of Sheffield was divided. Ecclesall chapel then became the main church for its own parish. A new part, called a transept, was added in 1907. The inside of the church was changed in 1964 by George Pace. It was updated again in 1997.
