Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Allan Cameron, 16th of Lochiel (around 1567–1647) was an important Scottish clan chief and a brave soldier. He is remembered for fighting in several key battles during a time of great change in Scotland.

Allan Cameron was the only son of John Cameron. His father was sadly murdered in 1569. Because of this, Allan was raised by his aunt.

He married the daughter of the Stewart of Appin family. Allan had two sons. His oldest son, John Cameron, died in 1635 while he was imprisoned in Edinburgh. His second son, Donald, became the first laird (landowner) of Glendessary. This means Donald started the Glendessary branch of the Clan Cameron family.

A Life of Battles

Allan Cameron was a skilled fighter. He took part in the Battle of Glenlivet in 1594. This was an important conflict in Scottish history.

Later, during the Scottish Civil War, Allan fought alongside the Marquis of Montrose. He led his clan, the Camerons, into battle. One of his most famous moments was leading his clan at the Battle of Inverlochy in 1645. Amazingly, he was nearly 80 years old at the time! This shows how dedicated and strong he was.

His Successor

After Allan Cameron passed away, his grandson, Sir Ewen Cameron of Lochiel (1629–1729), became the next chief. Sir Ewen was very successful. He helped the clan become much stronger and wealthier. He was also a very loyal supporter of the Stuart kings and queens of Scotland.
