Allan Holmes (born 25 January 1845 – died 9 April 1909) was a New Zealand cricket player. He was born in Australia. Allan also worked as a lawyer, called a barrister, in the Supreme Court.
Early Life and Education
Allan Holmes was born in Geelong, Australia, in 1845. His father, Mathew Holmes, was a politician. Allan had two sisters, Katherine McLean Holmes and Annie Julia White, who both became artists.
In 1854, Allan's family moved to Scotland. They wanted to find better health care for his mother, who was not well. They lived on a large estate in a place called Lasswade.
Allan went to school at the University of Edinburgh. Later, he studied at The Queen's College, Oxford and finished his studies there in 1866. In 1870, he became a barrister, which is a type of lawyer, at the Middle Temple in London.
His family had already moved to Dunedin, New Zealand, in 1864. Allan decided to join them. He moved to Dunedin and soon after became a lawyer in the Supreme Court.
Cricket Days
Allan Holmes played cricket for the Otago team. He played in two important matches, called first-class appearances. His first match was during the 1870–71 cricket season.
In his first game, Allan played against the Canterbury team. He scored 12 runs in both parts of the game where he batted. However, Otago lost that match.
His second and final match was three seasons later. In this game, Allan did not score any runs. But Otago won the match! They stopped Canterbury from scoring many runs, limiting them to just 38 runs in their second turn at batting.
A Career in Law
In 1874, Allan Holmes started teaching law at the University of Otago. In the mid-1870s, he joined a law firm. This firm became known as Stewart, Holmes and Denniston. It was a very busy law practice in the Otago region.
In 1881, Allan was given an important job. He and another lawyer, Thomas S. Weston, were chosen to test people who wanted to become lawyers in New Zealand. They were the first people ever appointed to this role.
Family and Legacy
On 13 August 1873, Allan Holmes married Lillie McLean Waldie. They got married in Victoria, Australia.
Allan and Lillie had a son named Henry Herbert Holmes. He was born in Dunedin on 1 July 1874. Sadly, Henry died young, at age 29, on 24 December 1903. They also had a daughter, Lillie Catherine Mary Holmes, born on 17 September 1877 in Dunedin.
Allan Holmes passed away at his home in Roslyn, a suburb of Dunedin. His daughter, Lillie, died in 1933. His wife, Lillie, died in 1937. Allan, his wife, and both of their children are all buried together in the same plot at the Dunedin Northern Cemetery.
