History of the Museum Building

Who Was Allan Shivers?

Allan Shivers was the 37th Governor of Texas. He served as governor from 1948 to 1957. Before becoming governor, he was the Lieutenant Governor of Texas. He also spent 12 years working in the Texas State Senate.

Even though he was born in Lufkin, Texas, Allan Shivers had strong ties to Woodville. His family owned a home near the town. He lived in Woodville during his early years. Later, his family moved to Port Arthur, Texas. Governor Shivers was married to Marialice Shary. They had four children together.

From Home to Museum

The building that is now the library and museum is quite old. It was built in 1881. Its first owner was Robert A. Cruse. Governor and Mrs. Shivers bought this historic home in 1963. They had it moved to its current spot in Woodville.

They wanted to turn the house into a museum. It would display historical records and items from their lives. A famous interior designer named Melanie Kahane helped with this project. She had designed many theaters in New York City. A part of the house was also set aside to become Woodville's local public library.
