Alleghany is a very small community in Sierra County, California. It is located in the Sierra Nevada mountains. This area is known as the Gold Country. Alleghany is still an important place for gold mining today. The famous Sixteen To One Mine has been working since the time of the California Gold Rush.
Alleghany is about 20 miles (32 km) from the nearest main road, California State Route 49. The town mostly has one main street. You can find a post office, a bar, and a mining museum there. In 2010, 58 people lived in Alleghany.
The town got its name in 1859 from the Alleghany Tunnel mine. This mine helped the town grow when it found gold four years earlier. The mine itself was named after the Allegheny River.
