Allen Lake (also known as French: lac Allen in French) is a beautiful lake located in the area of Dysart et al in Haliburton County, Ontario, Canada. It's an important part of the Ottawa River drainage basin, which means its water eventually flows into the Ottawa River.
About Allen Lake
Allen Lake is a medium-sized lake in Central Ontario. It's a great example of how water flows through different landscapes. The lake is fed by a stream called Allen Creek, and its water also flows out through the same creek.
Size and Location
Allen Lake covers an area of about 96.96 hectares (that's about 240 acres). It sits at an elevation of 431 meters (about 1,414 feet) above sea level. The lake is quite long, stretching about 1,920 meters (1.2 miles), and is 880 meters (0.5 miles) wide.
Water Flow and Connections
Allen Lake is located at a special spot called a "height of land." This means it's on a natural ridge where water flows in different directions.
- Water from Allen Lake flows north and east towards the Ottawa River drainage basin.
- Water on the other side of this ridge flows west and southwest towards the Trent River drainage basin.
The main stream flowing into Allen Lake is Allen Creek. This creek comes from a nearby smaller lake called Little Allen Lake, located to the south. There's also another small, unnamed stream that flows into the southwest part of Allen Lake.
The water then flows out of Allen Lake from its northern end, also through Allen Creek. This creek then connects to Benoir Lake, which leads to the York River. From there, the water travels into the Madawaska River and finally reaches the mighty Ottawa River.
Nearby Communities
The closest community to Allen Lake is a place called Pusey. It's about 6.5 kilometers (4 miles) south of the lake, just across the border in the neighboring area of Highlands East.
