Allene Johnson, born on April 20, 1933, is a retired teacher. She taught chemistry for over 40 years. Her career was in the schools of Summit, New Jersey.

Early Life and Teaching Career

Allene Johnson grew up in the southern United States. She was one of six children. She went to Brunswick County, North Carolina High School. In 1954, she earned her chemistry degree. This was from North Carolina Central University. Her first teaching job was in Shallotte, North Carolina. She had to be creative to teach science. She even bought chemicals and equipment from a drug store. This helped her set up labs for her students.

After studying for her Master's degree, she moved. She attended Ohio State University for her advanced studies. In 1963, she moved to New Jersey. She began teaching in the Summit school system. She taught there for many years. She retired from teaching in 1997.

Helping Students in Science

Allene Johnson cares deeply about helping young people. She especially wants to help minority students. She volunteers with the Delta Sigma Theta sorority. This group has a program called Delta Academy. It helps middle-school girls learn about math and science.

Johnson leads "Chemistry for Kids" workshops. These workshops make science fun and easy to understand. She also works with the American Chemical Society (ACS). She is part of their Project SEED committee. Through Project SEED, she visits schools. She encourages minority students to join the program. Project SEED gives students hands-on science experience. Johnson also trains teachers in the Newark school district. She helps them teach science better. She has also judged science awards. One notable award was the Chemagination awards in 2003. She has been an education advisor for the New Jersey ACS section for many years.
