Lac Allioux is a beautiful freshwater lake in Quebec, Canada. It is located northeast of Quebec City. This lake is part of the large Laurentides Wildlife Reserve. It's a special place for nature and outdoor activities.

The lake is found in a wild area called Lac-Jacques-Cartier. This area is within the La Côte-de-Beaupré Regional County Municipality. A small forest road helps people get to the lake. The main activities here are forestry (logging) and tourism. Many people visit for fun and to enjoy nature.

Because of its high elevation, Lac Allioux freezes over in winter. The lake's surface is usually frozen from late November. It stays frozen until early April. You can safely walk or play on the ice from early December.

About Lac Allioux

Lac Allioux is located near the southeastern edge of the Laurentides Wildlife Reserve. It is surrounded by tall mountains. Some nearby peaks reach over 1,000 meters high!

The lake itself is about 4.3 kilometres (2.7 mi) long. It has a very curvy shoreline. At its widest point, it measures about 1.6 kilometres (0.99 mi). The lake sits at an elevation of 863 metres (2,831 ft) above sea level.

How the Lake is Fed

Many small streams flow into Lac Allioux. These streams come from different directions, like the east, south, and west. The lake also gets water from other nearby lakes. These include Lake Mornay, Lake Sifrine, Lake MacLeod, and Petit lac MacLeod.

Where the Water Goes

From Lac Allioux, the water flows out through a stream called the Green stream. This stream flows north for about 8.9 kilometres (5.5 mi). It passes through Lake Bignell. After that, the water flows into an unnamed stream. Finally, it joins the Sainte-Anne River. The Sainte-Anne River then flows all the way to the Saint Lawrence River.

Naming the Lake

For a long time, this lake was known locally as "Lac Vert," which means "Green Lake." This name was used on maps since 1929.

However, in 1943, the Quebec Geography Commission changed its name. They officially named it "Lac Allioux." This name honors a man named Vincent Allioux. He was born in France in 1698.

Vincent Allioux came to New France (now Quebec) around 1721. He taught hydrography at the Collège de Québec. Hydrography is the science of mapping and describing bodies of water. He taught there until 1729. Later, he returned to France to study theology. He came back to Quebec in 1734 as a Jesuit priest. The Jesuits had been teaching hydrography in Quebec since 1671.

The name "Lac Allioux" was officially recorded on December 5, 1968. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec.
