Allison is a small community in Wheeler County, Texas. It is located in the northeastern part of the county. Allison is known as an "unincorporated community." This means it does not have its own city government. It is also a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means the government counts the people living there for official records. In 2020, about 125 people lived in Allison.

History of Allison

Allison was started in 1929. It was built as a stop for the Panhandle and Santa Fe Railway, a train company. The town was named after R. H. Allison, who was a manager for the railroad. The Lone Star Townsite Company planned out the town.

The community grew and had its largest population in 1941. At that time, about 200 people lived there. This was just before the United States entered World War II.

Natural Resources and Schools

During the 1970s, Allison and the area around it benefited from natural resources. Workers found a lot of natural gas and oil nearby. This area is part of the Hugoton Gas Field. This is the largest natural gas field in the United States. It is also the world's biggest source of helium. Between 1973 and 1993, this field produced a huge amount of gas.

For many years, students in Allison went to the Allison Independent School District. However, in 2003, this school district joined with another one. It merged with the Fort Elliott Consolidated Independent School District.

Climate and Weather

Allison is located in the eastern part of the Texas Panhandle. The climate here is called a semiarid climate. This means it is usually dry, but not a desert. It gets some rain, but not a lot.

This area is also part of "Tornado Alley." This is a region in the central United States where tornadoes happen often. On June 8, 1995, a very strong tornado almost hit Allison. Scientists studied this tornado as part of the VORTEX projects. These projects help scientists learn more about how tornadoes form.

Population Information

Allison was first officially listed as a census designated place in the 2020 U.S. Census. This means the government counted the people living there as a specific area.
