Allium is a large group of flowering plants. This group includes many plants you might know. For example, garlic, leeks, onions, and chives are all part of the Allium family.
There are hundreds of different kinds, or species, of Allium plants. People have grown some of these for a very long time. Today, about 12 types are really important for food and business. The most famous type in this group is Allium sativum, which you probably know as garlic.
Scientists sometimes find it tricky to tell the exact difference between some Allium species. Because of this, they don't all agree on the exact number. Some think there are around 260 species, while others believe there are up to 860. Most scientists agree there are about 750 different Allium species.
