The Allium tuolumnense is a special type of wild onion. It is often called the Rawhide Hill onion because it is very rare and grows in a specific place.

This unique plant is found only in Tuolumne County, California. It lives in a small part of the Sierra Nevada foothills, especially around Rawhide Hill and the Red Hills. It likes to grow in a special kind of ground called serpentine soil.

What Does the Rawhide Hill Onion Look Like?

The Rawhide Hill onion grows from a reddish-brown bulb. This bulb is about one to two centimeters long. From the bulb, a thin, straight stem grows up to about 50 centimeters (20 inches) tall.

Usually, there is only one leaf on the plant. This leaf is about the same length as the stem.

Its Unique Flowers

At the top of the stem, you will find a round cluster of flowers. This cluster can hold 20 to 60 individual flowers. Each flower hangs on a small stalk, about one or two centimeters long.

When fully open, each flower is almost one centimeter wide. They have six oval-shaped petals, which can be white or pink. Inside each flower, there are six stamens, which are the parts that make pollen. The center part of the flower, called the ovary, has six pointed tips.
