Allognathus graellsianus is a type of land snail. It belongs to the family Helicidae, also known as "true snails." This snail is special because it is found only on Mallorca, one of Spain's Balearic Islands. When we say it's found only there, we call it an endemic species. Allognathus graellsianus is also the main example, or type species, for the group of snails called Allognathus.
These snails like to live in tiny spaces, like cracks in rocks and walls. They are usually quiet and hidden, but they become active when it rains.
What Does Allognathus graellsianus Look Like?
The shell of A. graellsianus is thin and shaped like a globe or sphere. It has about 4 to 4 and a half whorls, which are the turns of the snail's shell. These whorls grow quickly.
The shell usually has five bands that are clearly separated and sometimes broken up. The opening of the shell, called the aperture, is oval and rounded. It has a reddish-brown edge, which is called the peristome. The central hole on the underside of the shell, known as the umbilicus, is completely closed in this snail.
Where Does This Snail Live?
You can find Allognathus graellsianus in the northwestern part of the Tramuntana Mountains in western Mallorca. In many places, it lives alongside another similar snail species called A. hispanicus.
