Alma Gluck (born May 11, 1884 – died October 27, 1938) was a famous American singer. She was a soprano, which means she sang with a high voice. Alma was born in Romania but moved to the United States when she was young. She became one of the first classical musicians to be a big recording star.
About Alma Gluck
Alma Gluck was born as Reba Feinsohn in Iași, Romania. Her family was Jewish. When she was just five years old, in 1889, she moved to the United States.
Alma first became famous at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Later, she traveled all over America, giving many concerts. She was also one of the first musicians to make a lot of recordings.
Her recording of the song "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny" was very popular. Many people believed it was the first classical song by a famous musician to sell one million copies. It even received a special "gold disc" award! Alma Gluck also helped start an organization called the American Woman's Association.
Her Family Life
Alma Gluck was married twice. Her first husband was Bernard Glick, and they had a daughter named Marcia Davenport. Later, Alma married a very famous violinist named Efrem Zimbalist. They had two more children together: a son named Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. and a daughter named Maria. Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. later became a well-known actor.
Alma Gluck's stage name, "Gluck," was a little bit like her first husband's last name, "Glick."
In 1925, Alma Gluck decided to stop performing. She wanted to spend more time raising her family. She moved to New Hartford, Connecticut. Even though she grew up in a Jewish family, she and her husband became interested in Anglican Christianity. They regularly went to the Episcopal Church in New Hartford. Their children, Efrem Jr. and Maria, were christened there. Efrem Jr. also went to an Episcopal boarding school. Alma Gluck even recorded some Christian hymns with another singer named Louise Homer.
Alma Gluck became sick and passed away on October 27, 1938. She was 54 years old and died in New York City.
Her Legacy
Alma Gluck's family continued to be involved in the arts. Her granddaughter is the actress Stephanie Zimbalist. Stephanie is the daughter of Alma's son, the actor Efrem Zimbalist Jr..
