He later married Stephanie Spalding in 1956. They had one child. They were married until Stephanie passed away in 2007.

For his role in the TV series The F.B.I., Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. was honored by the FBI director Robert Mueller. He was even made a special member of the FBI because of how well he played his character.

Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. passed away on May 2, 2014, at his home in Solvang, California. He was 95 years old. He died of a possible heart attack while watering his plants.
He was buried at Town Hill Cemetery in New Hartford, Connecticut.
