History of Almaraz
The Old Bridge
A very old bridge over the Tagus River in Almaraz was built in the 1500s. It was built by Emperor Carlos I and was known by locals as the Albalat Bridge. This bridge was very important for travel and trade.
The Peninsular War
During the Peninsular War (1808-1814), a big conflict in Europe, the bridge faced danger. On March 14, 1809, Spanish forces destroyed it. They did this to stop the French army from using it to move their troops.
Later, in May 1812, a battle called the Battle of Almaraz took place. The Anglo-Portuguese Army, led by Lord Hill, fought against the French. They destroyed a temporary bridge the French had built across the Tagus River. This temporary bridge was guarded by two French garrisons.
The Bridge Today
After all the fighting, the old Almaraz bridge was repaired. Today, you can drive across it, connecting the past with the present.
