Almond Roca was created in 1912 by Harry Brown and J. C. Haley. They were the founders of the Brown & Haley Company. The name "Roca" was suggested by Tacoma's head librarian, Jacqueline Noel. She picked the Spanish word roca, which means 'rock' in English. This name described the candy well because it was hard and shaped like a log.

Harry Brown used to own a small candy shop. J.C. Haley worked for a company that sold spices. They met at church in 1908 and decided to start a business together. In 1914, they began their candy company, calling it the Oriole Candy Company. They later changed the name to Brown and Haley in 1919.

The Pink Tin Can

In 1927, Brown & Haley started using their famous pink tin cans for Almond Roca. These special cans helped keep the candy fresh for a longer time. Each piece of Almond Roca candy is wrapped in shiny gold-colored aluminum foil. This makes them look extra special!

Washington State Candy Debate

In 2009, some people in the Washington state government wanted to make Aplets & Cotlets the official candy of the state. However, this idea did not pass. Some lawmakers from the western part of Washington thought that Almond Roca should be the official state candy instead.

What's in Almond Roca?

Almond Roca is made with several yummy ingredients. These include sugar, almonds, and butter. It also contains palm oil, palm kernel oil, and cocoa powder. Other ingredients are whey, skim milk powder, soya lecithin, chocolate, and vanilla.

There's a cool tradition at the company. A tiny bit of the very first batch of toffee from 1923 is added to every new batch of candy. This helps keep the original taste alive!

Scientists have studied the candy's chocolate and almond coating. They found that it has about the same amount of almonds as two average-sized almonds.

Other Flavors to Try

Since 2003, Brown & Haley has made more kinds of their chocolate-covered toffee. You can find different flavors like sea salt caramel and dark chocolate. They also have varieties with other nuts, such as cashew and macadamia nut. If you like coffee, there's a mocha (coffee-flavored) version. There's even a peppermint flavor and a sugar-free option!
