Almond Roca was created in 1912. Harry Brown and J. C. Haley invented it. They were the founders of Brown & Haley Company.

The candy's name has a cool story! It was inspired by Jacqueline Noel. She was the head librarian in Tacoma. She picked the Spanish word roca. This word means 'rock' in English. It described the candy's hard, log-like shape.

Harry Brown owned a small candy shop. J.C. Haley worked for a spice company. They met at church in 1908. They started their candy business together in 1914. It was first called the Oriole Candy Company. They changed the name to Brown and Haley in 1919.

Brown & Haley first used the famous pink tin cans in 1927. These cans helped the candy stay fresh longer. Each piece of Almond Roca candy is wrapped in shiny gold-colored aluminum foil.

In 2009, some people in Washington state wanted to make Aplets & Cotlets the official state candy. But the idea didn't pass. Some lawmakers thought Almond Roca should get that honor instead.

What's Inside Almond Roca?

Almond Roca is made with several tasty ingredients. These include sugar, almonds, and butter. It also has palm oil, palm kernel oil, and cocoa powder. Other ingredients are whey, skim milk powder, and soya lecithin. Of course, it has chocolate and vanilla too!

The company has a special tradition. A tiny bit of the very first batch of toffee from 1923 is added to every new batch. This helps keep the original flavor alive!

Scientists have studied the candy. They found that the chocolate and almond coating on each piece has about the same amount of almonds as two average-sized whole almonds.
