Alonso de Arellano facts for kids
Alonso de Arellano was a Spanish explorer from the 1500s. He was a captain on a ship that helped find the Philippines again. This happened after earlier trips by explorers like Ferdinand Magellan and Ruy López de Villalobos.
Alonso de Arellano's Journey
Alonso de Arellano was the captain of a ship called the San Lucas. His ship was one of four in a group led by Miguel López de Legazpi. They left Mexico on November 21, 1564.
On December 1, the San Lucas got separated from the other ships. Arellano kept going towards the Philippines. In January 1565, he found several islands. These included Lib, Truk, Pulap, and Ngulu.
After exploring, Arellano sailed back to Mexico. He was the first person to sail a specific path across the Pacific Ocean. This path later became known as "Urdaneta's Route." Another explorer, Andrés de Urdaneta, was also part of Legazpi's group. Urdaneta also found this same path later. Historians gave Urdaneta the credit because he kept better notes and maps of his journey.
When Arellano returned, he was questioned about leaving Legazpi's fleet. However, the investigation did not find him guilty. He passed away in Mexico in 1579. Before he died, he wrote down the story of his voyage. This story was published in Spain in 1887.
