Conquest of Mexico
Captain De Grado was a close friend of Hernán Cortés. Cortés always kept him nearby and trusted his advice during difficult times.
Early Battles and Events
Alonso de Grado helped establish the city of Vera Cruz. He also took part in the Battle of Cholula. During this battle, the Spanish faced a surprise attack from the Aztecs. Alonso stayed calm and helped his group during the fight.
He was one of 30 Spanish soldiers who suggested to Cortés that they should take action to prevent future attacks. These soldiers, along with Cortés, entered the palace and captured Emperor Moctezuma.
Alonso was present during the sad event known as La Noche Triste. This was a night when the Spanish suffered many losses. He also fought in the Great Battle of Otumba. In this battle, the Spanish defeated a much larger army. They led the Aztec forces to an open field, which gave the Spanish an advantage.
New Settlements and Challenges
In 1522, Alonso joined an expedition led by Gonzalo de Sandoval. Their goal was to establish the village of Espíritu Santo. This settlement was created for trade and was named because it was founded during the Pentecost holiday. Alonso was one of its first residents.
In 1523, one of Cortés's captains, Cristóbal de Olid, went against Cortés. Olid made a deal with Cuba's governor to conquer Honduras for himself. Don Alonso helped chase after Olid. After Olid was captured, Alonso joined Luis Marín. They worked together to bring the region of Chiapas under Spanish control.
As a reward, Alonso was promised control over half the people in the region. This system was called an encomienda, meaning he would be in charge of or protect them. However, he faced questions about how he treated the local people. He was accused of not following the Laws of Burgos, which were rules for how the Spanish should treat native populations. Cortés had him arrested while these accusations were investigated.
Later Life and Duties
In 1525, Alonso married the Aztec princess Isabel de Moctezuma. Soon after, Cortés gave him an important job. He became the Visitador General of New Spain. His special duty was to travel across the kingdom. He had to make sure that native people were treated well. He also had to stop anyone from illegally enslaving them, following the Laws of Burgos.
Alonso de Grado died sometime before 1527 while carrying out these important duties.
