Alonzo Sidney Powell, born on December 12, 1964, is an American baseball player who used to play as an Outfielder and is now a coach. He played in the big leagues, Major League Baseball (MLB), for teams like the Montreal Expos and Seattle Mariners. Right now, he helps players hit the ball better as the hitting coach for the Salt Lake Bees.
Alonzo Powell made history in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) in Japan. He was the first player from another country to win the batting title three times in a row!

Alonzo Powell's Baseball Journey
Playing in Major League Baseball
Alonzo Powell started his baseball journey when the San Francisco Giants signed him in 1983. He made his first big league appearance on April 6, 1987, with the Montreal Expos. That year, Powell played 14 games. He got 8 hits and had 4 RBI (runs batted in).
In 1991, he played for the Seattle Mariners. He had 24 hits in 111 at-bats. This means his batting average was .216. He also hit 3 home runs and had 12 RBI.
Playing in Japan: Nippon Professional Baseball
On May 4, 1992, Alonzo Powell moved to Japan to play for the Chunichi Dragons. He played in Japan for seven seasons. He became a star there!
Powell was only the third player in the Central League (a Japanese baseball league) to win three batting titles in a row. He was also the first player from another country to do this! He had amazing batting averages of .324, .355, and .340 from 1994 to 1996.
He was also chosen four times as the Best Nine center-fielder in NPB from 1993 to 1996. Plus, he was a two-time Central League All-Star.
Coaching Career
After his playing days, Alonzo Powell became a coach. He helped many young players improve their skills.
Early Coaching Roles
From 2002 to 2003, Powell was the hitting coach for the Double-A Chattanooga Lookouts. Then, from 2004 to 2005, he was the manager for the Single-A Dayton Dragons.
In 2006, he worked as a hitting instructor for the Seattle Mariners' minor league teams. The next year, in 2007, he became the hitting coach for the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers. This team is also part of the Mariners' organization.
Coaching in the Major Leagues
On May 9, 2010, the Seattle Mariners announced that Powell would be their main hitting coach. Later, on November 17, 2011, he joined the San Diego Padres as an Assistant Hitting Coach.
On December 7, 2015, the Houston Astros named Powell as their new hitting coach. He helped the Astros win the World Series in 2017! After that, on November 2, 2017, he became the hitting coach for the San Francisco Giants.
In 2019, it was announced that Powell would return to Japan. He joined the coaching staff of his former team, the Chunichi Dragons.
Most recently, on February 16, 2024, Powell was named the hitting coach for the Salt Lake Bees. This team is the Los Angeles Angels' Triple-A affiliate.
Personal Life
In January 2018, Alonzo Powell had surgery for a health issue. He later talked about his health journey in Napa.
