Alonzo Sidney Powell (born December 12, 1964) is an American former professional baseball outfielder and a current coach. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Montreal Expos and Seattle Mariners. He is currently the hitting coach for the Salt Lake Bees.
Powell made history in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). He was the first foreign player to win three batting titles in a row.

Playing Baseball: Alonzo Powell's Career
Starting in Major League Baseball (MLB)
Alonzo Powell began his professional baseball journey in February 1983. He was signed by the San Francisco Giants. He made his first appearance in Major League Baseball on April 6, 1987. This was with the Montreal Expos.
In 1987, Powell played in 14 games. He got 8 hits and had 4 RBI (Runs Batted In). Later, in 1991, he played for the Seattle Mariners. During that season, he had 24 hits in 111 at-bats. This gave him a .216 batting average. He also hit 3 home runs and had 12 RBI.
Playing in Japan: Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB)
On May 4, 1992, Alonzo Powell's contract was bought by the Chunichi Dragons. This team is part of the Japanese baseball league. Powell played in Japan for seven seasons.
He became a very successful player there. He was only the third player in the history of the Central League to win three batting titles in a row. He was also the first foreign player to achieve this amazing feat. He had batting averages of .324 in 1994, .355 in 1995, and .340 in 1996. From 1993 to 1996, he was named the NPB Japanese Baseball Best Nine center-fielder four times. He was also chosen as a Central League All-Star twice.
Coaching Baseball: Alonzo Powell's Journey
Early Coaching Roles
After his playing career, Powell became a coach. From 2002 to 2003, he was the hitting coach for the Double-A Chattanooga Lookouts. Then, from 2004 to 2005, he was the manager for the Single-A Dayton Dragons.
In 2006, he worked as a minor league hitting instructor for the Seattle Mariners. The next year, in 2007, he became the hitting coach for the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers. This team was also part of the Mariners' organization.
Coaching in Major League Baseball
On May 9, 2010, the Seattle Mariners announced that Powell would be their main hitting coach. He then moved to the San Diego Padres as an Assistant Hitting Coach on November 17, 2011.
On December 7, 2015, the Houston Astros hired Powell as their new hitting coach. He helped the Astros win the World Series in 2017. After that, on November 2, 2017, he became the hitting coach for the San Francisco Giants.
Returning to Japan and Latest Role
On November 18, 2019, it was announced that Powell joined the coaching staff of the Chunichi Dragons in Japan. This was the same team he played for earlier in his career.
Most recently, on February 16, 2024, Powell was named the hitting coach for the Salt Lake Bees. This team is the Triple-A affiliate for the Los Angeles Angels.
