Alpine was a small village located in Skagit County, Washington, near Lake Cavanaugh. It was once a busy place but is now considered a ghost town. This means it was abandoned and very few, if any, people live there anymore.

Discovering Alpine, Washington

Alpine was a village right on the edge of Lake Cavanaugh. This lake is in Skagit County, Washington. People started moving to this area around 1890. They built homes and created a community there.

The Other Alpine

Interestingly, there was another village named Alpine about 50 miles south. This second Alpine was started around the same time, in 1894. It was founded by Carl L. Clemans, who had studied at Stanford University.

What Was the Other Alpine Like?

The southern Alpine village had several homes. It also had a schoolhouse for children to learn. There was a post office where people could send and receive mail. A hotel offered a place for travelers to stay.

Why Was the Other Alpine Abandoned?

This Alpine village lasted for many years. However, a new road called the Stevens Pass Scenic Highway was built. This highway was about a mile away from the village. Sadly, there was no easy way to get from the highway to Alpine. Because of this, people started to leave. By 1929, the village was completely abandoned.

Learning More About Alpine

You can find a short mention of the Alpine in Skagit County in a book from 1906. It is called An Illustrated History of Skagit and Snohomish Counties. A more detailed book about Alpine and the first people who settled near Lake Cavanaugh was published in 2009. This book is titled Alpine On The Lake by Allan Ray Wenzel.
