Alpine's Story
Alpine was first known as "Nettle Carrier." This name came from a Cherokee chief who lived in a nearby village a long time ago.
For many years, Alpine was home to the Alpine Institute. This was a special school that helped people in the area. It was very important in the 1800s and early 1900s.
A post office was set up in Nettle Carrier in 1845. Later, in 1921, the name of the community was changed to "Alpine" after the school.
Where is Alpine?
Alpine is in a narrow valley. This valley was formed by Nettlecarrier Creek. The creek flows into the Obey River to the east of Alpine.
The valley is surrounded by hills and high ridges. One of the most notable is Alpine Mountain. It rises almost 1,000 feet (305 meters) above the community to the south.
Tennessee State Route 52 is the main road that goes through Alpine. It connects Alpine to Livingston, which is about 10 miles (16 km) to the west. It also connects to Jamestown, about 20 miles (32 km) to the east.
