The Alpine Theatre Project (ATP) is a special theatre group in Whitefish, Montana. It's a professional company that puts on amazing musicals, plays, and concerts. ATP also helps students in Montana's Flathead Valley learn about theatre and the arts.

About the Alpine Theatre Project

How ATP Started

The Alpine Theatre Project began in December 2004. It was started by three actors: David Ackroyd, Betsi Morrison, and Luke Walrath. These actors had successful careers on stage, in movies, and on TV before moving to Montana.

They wanted to create a professional theatre company in beautiful Northwest Montana. Their goal is to "imagine without boundaries" and create exciting shows. They also aim to provide great arts education. Many artists who work with ATP have performed in over 190 Broadway shows! They have even won many awards, including Tony Awards, Emmy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and an Academy Award.

Where ATP Performs

The Alpine Theatre Project puts on its main shows at the Whitefish Performing Arts Center. This is a large auditorium with 454 seats. It's located inside the Whitefish Middle School. The community helped pay for the big renovation of this space.

ATP also has a special place called "The Garage." This used to be an auto repair shop! Now, it's where ATP holds its acting classes for kids. They also put on smaller, more casual shows there.

Working with Unions

ATP works with professional theatre unions. These unions make sure that actors, designers, and directors are treated fairly.

  • Actors Equity Association: This is the union for professional stage actors and managers.
  • United Scenic Artists: This union is for people who design sets and costumes.
  • Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers: This union is for directors and choreographers.

ATP's Shows and Programs

Summer Season Shows

The Alpine Theatre Project puts on most of its shows during the summer. These include big musicals, concerts, and original plays. They also have "Outside the Box" readings. These are plays read in interesting places that fit the story!

Yuletide Affair

Every December, ATP presents the Yuletide Affair. This is a popular holiday concert. It features festive songs and funny skits. Many of ATP's regular artists perform in it. Since it started in 2004, almost every show has been completely sold out!

Working with the Glacier Symphony

Since 2007, ATP has teamed up with the Glacier Symphony and Chorale. Together, they perform classic musicals with a full orchestra. Imagine a live symphony playing the music for a musical!

Other Special Events

ATP also puts on other concerts and events throughout the year. These shows happen in different towns around the Flathead Valley. ATP has even been the first place to show two brand-new plays! One play, "Another Side of the Island," starred Academy Award winner Olympia Dukakis. Another, "Stories by Heart," starred Emmy and Tony Award winner John Lithgow.

Alpine Theatre Project Kids! (ATP Kids!)

ATP Kids! is a comedy group made up of six main members: Brian Colonna, Hannah Duggan, Erik Edborg, Erin Rollman, Samantha Schmitz, and Evan Weissman. Everyone in the group helps with everything! They all write, act, design sets, direct, and help with the technical parts of their shows and online videos.

Internship Program

The ATP Internship program started in 2005. It gives high school and college students a chance to learn about theatre. Interns work with ATP professionals during the summer. They help with all parts of putting on a show, from the office work to backstage. Students can even earn college credit for their work!
