Discover Alta Lake

Alta Lake has an interesting history and unique features. It's a great place to learn about nature and the environment.

What's in a Name?

Originally, this lake was called Summit Lake. However, there were many other lakes in British Columbia with the same name. To avoid confusion, it was renamed Alta Lake. The name "Alta" comes from the Spanish word for "high up" or "upper." This name fits well because the lake is quite high up in the mountains.

How Big is Alta Lake?

Alta Lake sits at an elevation of about 642 m (2,106 ft) above sea level. It covers an area of approximately 1.1 km2 (0.42 sq mi). The lake stretches about 2.2 km (1.4 mi) from north to south. At its widest point, from east to west, it measures about 675 metres (2,215 ft).

Where Does the Water Go?

The southern end of Alta Lake is a special place. It marks the divide between two important river systems. Water from the lake flows into either the Green River or the Cheakamus River. This makes Alta Lake a key part of the local water network.
