About Altorricón
Altorricón is a charming Spanish town. It has a population of about 1,400 people. The people who live here are called Altorriconan.
What's in a Name?
The town has two official names: Altorricón and El Torricó. Most people use Altorricón. Historians believe the name "Altorricón" might not be the original one.
The name likely comes from "Torricó." This word means "small tower" in a local language. The "Al-" part is a common prefix from Arabic names. It's not clear which small tower the name refers to. It could be the old Castle of Vallbona. Or it might be a building that no longer exists.
Water and Land
Water is very important for the land around Altorricón. A main water channel, called La Mola, crosses the area. This channel comes from the Canal d'Aragó i Catalunya. It helps to water the farms and fields.
Smaller channels also spread the water. These include the ravines of San Bartomeu and Clamorelles. A small part of the area gets water from the Oriols and Vallbona streams.
Getting Around
Altorricón is easy to reach by road. A local road goes through the middle of the town. This road connects to the national road N240. The N240 goes from Tarragona to San Sebastián.
Locals have special names for parts of this road. The part heading south is called la carretera del Butano. This is because a butane gas station used to be there. The part going north is simply called carretera de Tamarite.
There is another road from the town center. It goes southwest to Tamarite's railway station. This road also links Altorricón to a small community called La Melusa. So, people call it carretera de La Melusa.
Language Spoken
The local people in Altorricón speak a special kind of Catalan. It is a unique dialect of the language.
