How Alvear Got Its Name
Alvear was officially started in 1863. It was founded under a special tree called the "Ombú Protector," which is even shown on the town's official symbol! People believe the town was named after General Carlos de Alvear. He was born in the Corrientes province. Members of Congress wanted to honor him, so they named the new town "Alvear." Some also say that Don Diego de Alvear, who was Carlos María's father, lived near the Itaqui pass for a few years. This might have also helped give the town its name.
