Communities in Mikado Township
Mikado Township is home to a few smaller communities. These places are not officially separate towns but are recognized areas within the township.
Alvin
- Alvin is an unincorporated community in the southeastern part of the township. It started as a place for lumbering, which means cutting down trees for wood. Alvin even had its own post office for a short time, from 1906 to 1911.
Kurtz
- Kurtz is another unincorporated community. It's located on the western edge of the township. This community was named after Hugo Kurtz and also began as a logging area around the year 1900. Like Alvin, Kurtz had a post office for a brief period, from 1909 to 1911.
Mikado
- Mikado is the main unincorporated community in the township. You can find it in the northeastern corner. It was first called West Greenbush. A man named Daniel Bruce founded it in 1886. He built a hotel for the lumbermen working in the area. Bruce helped convince the Detroit and Mackinac Railway to build a train station there. He wanted the community and post office to be named Bruceville or Bruce Crossing, but those names were already taken. So, the postal service chose the name Mikado instead. The community briefly became an official village in 1906 but later went back to being an unincorporated area. The Mikado post office is still open today and serves most of Mikado Township and parts of nearby townships.
