Alvin Joseph Brooks III, born on September 11, 1979, is an American college basketball coach. He is currently a top coach, called the associate head coach, at the University of Kentucky. Fun fact: his dad, Alvin Brooks, is also a basketball coach for Lamar!

Early Life and College Days

Alvin Brooks III was born in Houston, Texas. He played basketball at Midland College from 1998 to 2000. He helped his team, the Midland Chaparrals, get to sixth place in the 2000 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Tournament.

After Midland, Brooks went to Idaho State University. He played there from 2000 to 2002 under coach Doug Oliver. In his last year, he was recognized for his good grades in sports. He earned a degree in finance in 2002. Later, in 2003, he got a master's degree in sports administration.

Alvin Brooks III started his coaching journey at the junior college level.

Starting as an Assistant Coach

  • Arkansas–Fort Smith: From 2004 to 2006, he was an assistant coach at Arkansas–Fort Smith. He helped them win the NJCAA championship in 2006!
  • Midland College: For the 2006–2007 season, he went back to Midland College as an assistant coach.

Moving to Division I Basketball

  • Bradley University: In 2007, Brooks moved up to coach at the Division I level. He became an assistant coach and recruiter at Bradley University under Jim Les. During his three years there, Bradley made it to the final round of the 2008 College Basketball Invitational. They also won 20 or more games in two different seasons.
  • Sam Houston State: In 2010, Brooks became an assistant coach at Sam Houston State for head coach Jason Hooten.

Big Wins with Kansas State and Baylor

  • Kansas State: Brooks spent four years as an assistant coach at Kansas State under Bruce Weber.
  • Baylor University: After the 2015–16 season, he joined Baylor University as an associate head coach under Scott Drew. This was a very successful time! Brooks helped Baylor win regular season titles in 2021 and 2022. The 2020–2021 season was amazing. Baylor made it to the Final Four and then won the NCAA National Championship!

Joining the Kentucky Wildcats

On April 24, 2024, Alvin Brooks III took on a new role. He became the associate head coach at the University of Kentucky.
