Alvin Leon Williams Jr. was born on August 6, 1974. He is a former professional basketball player from the United States. Alvin played college basketball for Villanova University. He then joined the National Basketball Association (NBA) and played from 1997 to 2007.

Alvin's College Basketball Career

Alvin Williams finished high school at Germantown Academy in 1993. He was in the same graduating class as actor Bradley Cooper. After high school, Alvin went to Villanova University. He was a highly sought-after player.

Alvin helped bring local talent from Philadelphia back to the Villanova Wildcats team. In his final year, he was the top scorer and assist maker for Villanova. He averaged 17 points and 4.5 assists per game. Alvin and his teammate, Tim Thomas, led Villanova to win the Big East regular season title. They also made it to the 1997 NCAA tournament. They lost in the second round to California, a team that included future NFL star Tony Gonzalez.

Alvin's Professional Basketball Career

Alvin Williams was chosen by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1997 NBA draft. He was picked in the second round. In February 1998, he was traded to the Toronto Raptors.

Playing for the Toronto Raptors

Alvin became an important player for the Raptors. He improved a lot as the starting point guard under coach Lenny Wilkens in 2001. He started all 82 games for two seasons in a row (2001–02 and 2002–03). The 2002–03 season was his best. He averaged 13.2 points and 5.3 assists per game.

Alvin missed a lot of games in the 2003–04 season. He also missed the entire 2004–05 season because of a knee injury. He returned for one game in the 2005–06 season. But his injured knee forced him back onto the injured list.

On July 26, 2006, the Raptors let Alvin go. This was to make space for another player, Fred Jones. Reports said Alvin and the team agreed that the Raptors would only pay half of his remaining salary.

Playing for the Los Angeles Clippers

On January 20, 2007, Alvin Williams signed a short 10-day contract with the Los Angeles Clippers. He played in only two games. After his first contract ended, he was not signed for another one.

Alvin's Career After Playing

After his playing career, Alvin Williams became a coach. On July 1, 2009, the Raptors hired him as an assistant coach. This was his return to the team he played for.

On September 24, 2010, the Raptors gave Alvin a new role. He became the team's Director of Player Development. In June 2013, he left his position with the Raptors.

Since 2015, Alvin has worked as an NBA Analyst for Rogers Sportsnet. In September 2021, he started doing color commentary for Raptors games on Rogers Sportsnet. He replaced Leo Rautins in this role.
