College Basketball Career
Alvin Williams finished high school at Germantown Academy in 1993. He then joined Villanova as a highly sought-after player. His coach, Steve Lappas, wanted to bring talented players from Philadelphia back to the Wildcats team.
During his final year at Villanova, Williams was a star player. He led the team in scoring with 17 points per game and also in assists with 4.5 assists per game. With his teammate Tim Thomas, Williams helped Villanova win a Big East regular season title. They also made it to the 1997 NCAA tournament. In that tournament, they lost in the second round to California.
Professional Basketball Career
Playing for the Toronto Raptors
Alvin Williams was chosen by the Portland Trail Blazers in the second round of the 1997 NBA draft. However, he was traded to the Toronto Raptors in February 1998.
Williams became an important player for the Raptors. He improved a lot when Lenny Wilkens became the head coach in 2001. Williams was the starting point guard and played in all 82 games for two seasons in a row (2001–02 and 2002–03). His best season was 2002–03, when he averaged 13.2 points and 5.3 assists per game.
After that, Williams faced challenges with a knee injury. He missed a third of the 2003–04 season and all of the 2004–05 season. He tried to return for the 2005–06 season but played only one game before his knee injury forced him back onto the injured list.
On July 26, 2006, the Raptors decided to let Williams go. This was done to make space for another player, Fred Jones. Reports said that Williams and the team agreed that the Raptors would only pay him half of his remaining salary.
Time with the Los Angeles Clippers
On January 20, 2007, Williams signed a short 10-day contract with the Los Angeles Clippers. He played in only two games for them. After his first contract ended, he was not signed for a second one.
After Playing Basketball
Alvin Williams continued his career in basketball even after he stopped playing.
Coaching and Player Development
On July 1, 2009, the Toronto Raptors announced that they had hired Williams as an assistant coach. This was a return to the team where he had played for many years.
Later, on September 24, 2010, the Raptors gave Williams a new role. He became the team's Director of Player Development. In this job, he helped players improve their skills. In June 2013, he left his position with the Raptors.
Sports Broadcasting
Since 2015, Alvin Williams has worked as an NBA Analyst for Rogers Sportsnet. He shares his knowledge and opinions about basketball games.
In September 2021, Rogers Sportsnet and the Toronto Raptors announced that Williams would become the main color commentator for Raptors games on that network. He took over from Leo Rautins.
