Alypius of Antioch facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Alypius of Antioch was an important person in the ancient Roman Empire. He was a geographer, someone who studies and maps the Earth. He also held a high position called a vicarius in Roman Britain. This was like being a governor or a top official. He probably served in the late 350s AD. Alypius took over from another official named Flavius Martinus. We know about his time in charge from historical records.

Life of Alypius

Alypius came from a city called Antioch. He worked for the Roman Emperor Constantius II. He was likely sent to Britain to make sure that only loyal officials were in charge. This was a time when there was a lot of distrust and unrest in the Roman Empire. Alypius might have even had to deal with a rebellion led by someone named Carausius II.

Rebuilding the Temple

Later, Alypius was given a very special job. Emperor Julian asked him to help rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem. Julian wanted to bring back old Roman traditions and religions, including pagan and Jewish practices. This was part of his plan to change the Christianization of the Roman Empire.

Letters from the Emperor

Emperor Julian wrote two letters to Alypius. In one letter, Julian invited Alypius to visit Rome. In the other, Julian thanked Alypius for a book he had written about geography. Sadly, this book no longer exists today.
