The Sadleria cyatheoides, often called amaumau fern or ʻamaʻu, is a unique type of fern. It is part of the Blechnaceae family. This fern is special because it grows only in Hawaii. It can be found on all the main islands. You might see it on old lava flows, in open areas, or in wet forests. It grows at altitudes up to 1,676 meters (5,500 feet).
This fern can grow quite tall. It usually reaches a height of 0.9 to 1.5 meters (3 to 5 feet). Its trunk can be 7.5 to 10 centimeters (3 to 4 inches) wide. Because of its size and trunk, the ʻamaʻu looks a lot like a small tree fern. The famous Kīlauea volcano's Halemaʻumaʻu crater is named after this very fern.
Description
The ʻamaʻu fern has interesting fronds, which are its leaves. When the fronds are young, they often have a reddish color. This red tint is not just for looks. It helps protect the young fronds. The red color acts like a natural sunscreen. It blocks harmful rays from the sun. This protection helps the fern grow strong and healthy.
