Discovering Sadleria Ferns
This section is about how scientists learned about and named the Sadleria ferns.
Who Discovered Them?
A scientist named Georg Friedrich Kaulfuss first officially described the Sadleria group in 1824. He studied samples of a specific Sadleria fern, S. cyatheoides. These samples were collected by Adelbert von Chamisso in 1821. Chamisso was a naturalist on a Russian science trip. This trip was led by Otto von Kotzebue on a ship called Rurick.
How Did Sadleria Get Its Name?
Kaulfuss named the Sadleria ferns after Joseph Sadler. Joseph Sadler (1791–1849) was a naturalist from Hungary. He spent his time studying ferns found in Europe.
Types of Sadleria Ferns
As of December 2019, the Checklist of Ferns and Lycophytes of the World lists these six types of Sadleria ferns:
- Sadleria cyatheoides Kaulf. (also known as amaumau fern or rasp fern)
- Sadleria pallida Hook. & Arn.
- Sadleria souleyetiana (Gaudich.) Moore
- Sadleria squarrosa (Gaudich.) T.Moore
- Sadleria unisora (Baker) Rob.
- Sadleria wagneriana D.D.Palmer & Flynn
The Halemaʻumaʻu crater on the Kīlauea volcano in Hawaii is named after the S. cyatheoides fern.
