Ambrosius Holbein (born around 1494 – died around 1519) was a talented artist. He was from Germany and later lived in Switzerland. Ambrosius created beautiful paintings, drawings, and prints. He was the older brother of the famous artist Hans Holbein the Younger. Sadly, Ambrosius passed away in his mid-twenties. He left behind only a small number of artworks.

Who Was Ambrosius Holbein?

Early Life and Family in Augsburg

Ambrosius was born in Augsburg, Germany, around 1494. At that time, Augsburg was a very important city. It was a center for art, culture, and trade. His father was Hans Holbein the Elder, a well-known artist. Hans the Elder helped change German art from the old Gothic style to the new Renaissance style.

Ambrosius and his younger brother, Hans, learned art in their father's studio. They learned how to paint. They also learned other crafts like being a goldsmith (someone who works with gold), a jeweller, and a printmaker.

A Family Portrait

You can see young Ambrosius, his brother Hans, and their father in a painting. It's the left part of their father's 1504 altarpiece. An altarpiece is a work of art placed behind the altar in a church. This painting is called Basilica of St. Paul. You can see it today at the Staatsgalerie in Augsburg.

Moving to Switzerland

Around 1515, Ambrosius likely lived in a Swiss town called Stein am Rhein. There, he helped another painter named Thomas Schmid. They worked on murals, which are paintings on walls, in a monastery.

The next year, 1516, Ambrosius moved to Basel, Switzerland. His brother Hans also moved there. Ambrosius first worked as a journeyman. This means he was a skilled worker who traveled and worked for different masters. He worked in Hans Herbster's art studio.

Becoming a Citizen and His Later Years

In 1517, Ambrosius joined the Basel painters' guild. A guild was like a club or union for people in the same job. On June 6, 1518, he became a citizen of Basel. A goldsmith named Jörg Schweiger helped him. Ambrosius had painted a portrait of Jörg Schweiger before.

After 1518, Ambrosius's name disappears from records. People believe he passed away around 1519. It's thought he might have gotten sick, as many people did back then.

His Important Artworks
