Amelanchier sanguinea, also known as the red-twigged shadbush or roundleaf serviceberry, is a type of shrub. It grows naturally in eastern and central North America. You can find it from New Brunswick in Canada all the way to Saskatchewan, and south into northern Georgia.
This plant is most common in eastern Canada, the northeastern United States, and the Great Lakes region.
About the Red-Twigged Shadbush
The red-twigged shadbush is a shrub that can grow quite tall. It can reach up to 3 meters (about 10 feet) in height.
This plant produces fruits that are safe to eat. They taste sweet and are red when they are young. As they get ripe, they change color to purple or dark-blue.
Even though these fruits look a lot like berries, they are actually called pomes. A pome is a type of fruit where the seeds are in a core, like an apple or a pear.
Different Kinds of Red-Twigged Shadbush
Scientists have identified a few different types, or varieties, of Amelanchier sanguinea. These varieties are slightly different from each other, often in where they grow or small features.
Here are the main varieties:
- Amelanchier sanguinea var. gaspensis
- Amelanchier sanguinea var. grandiflora
- Amelanchier sanguinea var. sanguinea
