American Lake is a large, natural lake in Lakewood, Washington. It's located right next to Joint Base Lewis-McChord, often called JBLM. This lake is the biggest natural lake you'll find in Pierce County.

There are two public parks along the lake's shores. These are American Lake North Park & Marina and Harry Todd Park. Both parks have beaches where you can swim, fish, or enjoy a picnic. American Lake North Park also has a place to launch boats. Harry Todd Park has tennis courts for playing sports.

Fishing is a very popular activity at American Lake. Many different types of fish live here. Some of the most popular fish to catch include:

  • Cutthroat trout
  • Largemouth bass
  • Rainbow trout
  • Rock bass
  • Smallmouth bass
  • Sockeye salmon (also called kokanee)
  • Yellow perch

The Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife helps keep the lake healthy for fish. They regularly check on the fish and add more of the popular kinds. This helps make sure there are always plenty of fish for everyone.

Fun Places to Visit

American Lake has several interesting spots to explore. These areas offer different ways to enjoy the water and the outdoors.

Summer's Cove

Summer's Cove is a small, quiet area on the side of the lake near JBLM. It's a favorite spot for military families to swim. They often visit on their days off during the summer. This cove is away from the main fishing spots. It's also close to a park and other lakeside areas.

Russell Landing Marina and Dock

Russell Landing Marina is located near Summer's Cove. It's a great place for boaters. The marina has a special ramp where you can launch your boat into the lake. There's also a picnic area if you want to eat outdoors.

You can rent different types of watercraft here. They offer:

  • Motor boats
  • Kayaks
  • Jet skis

The United States Army's Family and MWR Programs takes care of this marina. They make sure it's a fun and safe place for everyone.

Islands of American Lake

American Lake has a few islands. Some of these islands are:

  • Barlow Island
  • Beard Island
  • Cors Island
  • Short Island
  • Silcox Island

Silcox Island is special because people actually live there. Barlow Island was bought by the State of Washington in 1931. It became part of an area called Camp Murray.
