The Ameridelphia is a group of marsupial mammals. These animals are special because they are only found in South America. Think of them as a big family of marsupials.
This group is called a "superorder" in biology. It includes two main smaller groups, called "orders." These are the Didelphimorphia and the Paucituberculata.

What are Marsupials?
Marsupials are a unique type of mammal. Their babies are born very tiny and not fully developed. After birth, the babies usually crawl into a special pouch on their mother's belly. Inside this pouch, they continue to grow and feed.
How Marsupials are Different
Most mammals, like humans or dogs, develop fully inside the mother. Marsupials have a different way of raising their young. This pouch acts like a second womb, protecting the baby as it gets bigger and stronger.
Meet the Ameridelphia Family
The Ameridelphia superorder is made up of two main groups of animals. These are the opossums and the shrew opossums. Both are fascinating creatures with their own special traits.
Opossums (Didelphimorphia)
Opossums are the most well-known members of the Ameridelphia. There are many different kinds of opossums. They live in various habitats, from forests to grasslands.
Where Opossums Live
While many opossums live in South America, one species, the Virginia opossum, also lives in North America. They are very adaptable animals. You might even see them in your backyard!
Opossum Habits
Opossums are often active at night. They are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals. Their diet can include fruits, insects, small rodents, and even carrion (dead animals). They are known for "playing dead" when they feel threatened.
Shrew Opossums (Paucituberculata)
Shrew opossums are much smaller and less known than regular opossums. They look a bit like shrews, which are small, mouse-like mammals. These animals are quite rare.
Shrew Opossum Habitat
Shrew opossums live in specific parts of the Andes Mountains in South America. They prefer cool, damp, and dense forest areas. Their habitat is often at high altitudes.
Shrew Opossum Diet
These tiny marsupials mostly eat insects and worms. They use their long snouts to sniff out food in the leaf litter. They are very shy and hard to spot in the wild.
History of Ameridelphia
Scientists believe that the first marsupials appeared a very long time ago. Some of the earliest marsupial fossils have been found in North America. Over millions of years, marsupials spread to different parts of the world.
Ancient Ancestors
The ancestors of Ameridelphia likely lived during the Cretaceous period. This was the time of the dinosaurs. Later, some marsupials moved into South America. They then evolved into the diverse groups we see today.
Why South America?
South America was once an island continent. This meant that animals there evolved separately from those in other parts of the world. This isolation helped the Ameridelphia marsupials thrive and diversify.
