History of Amherst
When Amherst Began
The town of Amherst was started around the year 1887. Imagine, that's over 130 years ago! It was named after a place called Amherst, Massachusetts. A local businessman who came from Massachusetts chose this name for the new community.
The Post Office and County Changes
The Amherst Post Office opened its doors on February 18, 1888. This was an important step for the community. Before 1889, Amherst was part of a larger area called Weld County. But in 1889, Phillips County was created, and Amherst became part of this new county.
