Amina Rani Kilegefaanu was a powerful leader in the Maldives. She was born around 1745. Amina served as a princess regent from 1754 to 1757. This meant she ruled for her father when he was away. Later, she became the official ruler, or Sultana, from 1757 to 1759.
Amina's Early Life and Challenges
Amina was the daughter of Sultan Muhammad Imaduddin III. In 1752, something very serious happened. Her father was captured by a ruler named Ali Raja from Cannanore. He was taken to an island called Kavaratti. At the same time, the capital city of Malé was taken over. People from Cannanore, called Malabars, occupied the city.
After 17 weeks, Malé was finally freed. A brave leader named Muleegey Dom Hassan Maniku helped free the city. Amina's older cousin, Amina I, became the temporary ruler. Hassan Manikfan helped her rule.
Becoming a Regent
In 1754, Amina I decided to step down. Amina Rani Kilegefaanu was then named the princess regent. She was only nine years old at this time. She ruled for her father, who was still away. Hassan Manikfan continued to help her govern the country.
Ruling as Sultana
Amina's father, Muhammad Imaduddin III, passed away in 1757. When this happened, Amina Rani Kilegefaanu became the official ruler. She was proclaimed the Queen and Sultana of the Maldives. She was about twelve years old when she became queen. Hassan Manikfan continued to be her main advisor and helper.
In 1759, Queen Amina was no longer the ruler. Her uncle, Hasan 'Izz ud-din, took her place. It is said that her uncle was very kind to his royal family members. Amina reportedly received great respect from him after she was no longer queen.
