Amina Rani Kilegefaanu (born around 1745 – died after 1759) was a powerful young leader in the Maldives. She was a princess regent from 1754 to 1757. This meant she ruled for her father while he was away. Later, from 1757 to 1759, she became the official queen, known as the Sultana.
Early Life and Becoming Regent
Amina was the daughter of Sultan Muhammad Imaduddin III. In 1752, something difficult happened. Her father was captured by a ruler named Ali Raja. He was taken to an island called Kavaratti. At the same time, the capital city, Malé, was taken over.
After about four months, a brave leader named Hassan Manikfan freed Malé. Amina's cousin, Amina I, became the temporary ruler. Hassan Manikfan helped her rule.
Amina Takes the Throne
In 1754, Amina I decided to step down. Amina, who was only nine years old, was then named the princess regent. She was ruling for her father, who was still away. Hassan Manikfan continued to help her lead the country.
When her father, Muhammad Imaduddin III, passed away in 1757, Amina became the official queen. She was called the Sultana of the Maldives. She was about twelve years old when she became queen. Hassan Manikfan remained her helper.
End of Her Rule
In 1759, Queen Amina's rule ended. Her uncle, Hasan 'Izz ud-din, became the new ruler. It is said that her uncle was kind to his royal family. Amina reportedly received great respect from him after her rule.
