Amnicola limosus, also known as the mud amnicola, is a very tiny water snail. It's a type of mollusk (like clams or octopuses) that lives in water. This snail has a special lid called an operculum that can close its shell. It belongs to the Hydrobiidae family.
Where Does the Mud Amnicola Live?
This small snail is found in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean and along the Gulf of Maine. A specific type, Amnicola limosus limosus, has even been found far inland in Utah.
The first place where this snail was officially discovered and described was in the Delaware River and Schuylkill River.
What About Parasites?
The mud amnicola, Amnicola limosus, plays an important role for a type of parasite called a trematode (a kind of flatworm) named Metorchis conjunctus. It acts as the first intermediate host. This means the parasite lives inside the snail for a part of its life cycle before moving to another animal.
