Amos A. Phelps (born 1805, died 1847) was an American minister. He was also a strong supporter of abolitionism. This means he worked to end slavery in the United States.

Growing Up

Amos A. Phelps was born in Farmington, Connecticut. His parents were Clarissa Bodwell Phelps Tryon and Amos Phelps.

His Work to End Slavery

Amos Phelps went to Yale College and graduated in 1826. He then studied at Yale Divinity School and finished in 1830. After becoming a minister, he worked in churches in Hopkinton and Boston, Massachusetts.

In 1834, he started working for the American Anti-Slavery Society. This group wanted to end slavery. From 1837 to 1839, he was a main leader for the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society.

In 1839, he helped start a new group called the Massachusetts Abolition Society. This group was formed by abolitionists who had different ideas from another leader, William Lloyd Garrison. In 1840, he also joined the American and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society.

Amos A. Phelps passed away on July 27, 1847.

Family Life

Amos Phelps married Charlotte Brown Phelps. They had a son named Edward. Charlotte died in 1838.

In 1839, he married Caroline Little. They had a daughter named Lucy in 1841. Caroline died a few years later. Phelps then married Caroline's sister, Lucy Little, in 1844. They had two daughters together.
