This lake is nestled within the amazing Grand Teton National Park. It is in Teton County, Wyoming. Amphitheater Lake is quite close to another lake called Surprise Lake. It is only about .20 miles (0.32 km) (or 320 meters) west of Surprise Lake. A mountain peak called Disappointment Peak is also nearby. It is about .50 miles (0.80 km) (or 800 meters) to the west-northwest of the lake.

How to Reach the Lake

Getting to Amphitheater Lake is an adventure! You can reach it by hiking a trail that starts at the Lupine Meadows trailhead. The hike is considered challenging. It is just under 10 miles (16 km) (about 16 kilometers) for the round trip. This means you walk almost 10 miles to get there and back. The climb is quite steep, but the views along the way are incredible.

What Kind of Lake is it?

Amphitheater Lake is a type of lake called a glacial lake. This means it was formed by glaciers many, many years ago. As huge sheets of ice (glaciers) moved across the land, they carved out depressions in the ground. When the glaciers melted, these depressions filled with water, creating lakes like Amphitheater Lake. It is about 230 yd (210 m) long and 150 yd (140 m) wide.
