Amuay (Spanish pronunciation: [aˈmwaj]) is a fishing town in Venezuela. It is located on the Paraguana Peninsula in Falcón state. Amuay has a natural bay and an important fishing port.

A large part of the Paraguana Refinery Complex is also found here. This is one of the biggest oil refineries in the world. It can process about 940,000 barrels of oil each day.

The natural bay was made bigger to help supply oil tankers. Even though there is a large oil refinery nearby, the beaches close to the bay are healthy. The water is also very clear. The closest cities to Amuay are Judibana and Punto Fijo.

History of Amuay

Amuay first appeared on a map around the year 1800. The first people to live there were from a native tribe called the "Amuayes." They shared the Paraguana Peninsula with another tribe called the "Moruyes."

These tribes often traded goods with each other. This was done through a system called barter, where they exchanged items directly instead of using money. In their native language, "Amuay" means "Place where water and winds meet."

Until 1947, Amuay was mostly a small fishing village with very few people. However, things changed a lot after that year. The Creole Petroleum Corporation built the oil refinery. This brought many changes to the daily lives of the villagers.

On August 25, 2012, a serious incident happened at the gas storage facility in Amuay. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez ordered an urgent investigation into what happened. He also announced three days of national mourning for those affected.
