Ana Helena Chacón Echeverría is a Costa Rican politician. She served as the Second Vice President of Costa Rica from 2014 to 2018. She worked under President Luis Guillermo Solís. Later, she became the Ambassador to Spain under President Carlos Alvarado. Her work in politics focuses on human rights, public health, and equal rights for women. She has also been a cabinet minister and a deputy.

About Ana Helena Chacón
Ana Helena Chacón was born in San José, Costa Rica, on November 11, 1961. Her father, Luis Manuel Chacón, was also a political leader. She lives in Goicoechea with her two daughters.
Her Work with Organizations
Chacón is an expert in international relations. She has worked with many public policy groups. In 2011, she joined the United Nations' Global Commission on HIV and the Law. This group looked at legal issues affecting progress on AIDS in Asia-Pacific. From 2011 to 2013, she was on the board of Fundación PANIAMOR. This is a non-profit group that helps protect the rights of children.
Ana Helena Chacón's Political Journey
Chacón has held several important roles in the Costa Rican government.
Early Government Roles
From 2002 to 2006, Chacón was the Vice Minister of Public Safety. This was during the time Abel Pacheco was president. After that, she became a deputy in the Legislative Assembly of Costa Rica. She served in this role from 2006 to 2010. During this time, she was part of the Social Christian Unity Party. She supported the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). She also spoke up for the rights of children and for equal rights for all people. Sometimes, her ideas were different from others in her party.
Moving to a New Party
In 2010, Chacón left her old party. She helped create a new one called the Christian Democratic and Social Party. This new party did not run candidates but worked with her former party.
Becoming Vice President
In 2014, Ana Helena Chacón was chosen as the second vice presidential candidate for Luis Guillermo Solís. This was a surprise to many people. She had supported CAFTA and was part of a different party before. She explained that she still supported CAFTA but believed it had not been put into action correctly. She pointed out problems with fairness and honesty.
Ambassador to Spain
In 2018, President Carlos Alvarado chose her for a new role. She became Costa Rica's Ambassador in Madrid, Spain.

Views on Women in Politics
When she joined the Citizens' Action Party, Chacón shared her thoughts on how women were treated in politics. She felt that former President Laura Chinchilla's policies did not do enough for women. Chacón believes that leaders should actively work to support women's issues.
