Early Life and Work
Ana Helena Chacón was born in San José, Costa Rica, on November 11, 1961. Her father, Luis Manuel Chacón, was also involved in politics as a leader in the Social Christian Unity Party (PUSC). Today, she lives in Goicoechea and has two daughters.
Chacón studied international relations, which is about how different countries work together. She used her knowledge to help many organizations. For example, she worked with the United Nations on a project to help people with HIV. She also helped a non-profit group called Fundación PANIAMOR, which works to protect the rights of children.
A Career in Politics
Chacón has had a long and busy career in Costa Rica's government. She has held several important roles where she could help shape the country's laws and policies.
Government Minister and Deputy
From 2002 to 2006, Chacón was the Vice Minister of Public Safety. After that, from 2006 to 2010, she was elected as a deputy in the Legislative Assembly of Costa Rica. The Legislative Assembly is where Costa Rica's laws are made, similar to a congress or parliament.
During her time as a deputy, she was a member of the PUSC party. She worked on many important topics, including a big trade deal called the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). She also began to support ideas that were different from some of her party members, like rights for different kinds of families.
Joining a New Party
In 2010, Chacón decided to leave the PUSC party. Her ideas on some issues had changed, and she wanted to work with people who shared her new goals. She helped start a new political group, but eventually joined the Citizens' Action Party (PAC).
Politicians sometimes change parties when they feel a different group better represents their beliefs and the needs of the people they serve.
Becoming Vice President
In 2014, Chacón became the running mate for presidential candidate Luis Guillermo Solís. When he won the election, she became the Second Vice President of Costa Rica. She served in this role for four years, until 2018.
Some people were surprised by her new role because of her past support for CAFTA, which many in her new party had disagreed with. Chacón explained that while she still believed in the idea of the trade agreement, she felt it had not been managed well.
Ambassador to Spain
After her term as Vice President, President Carlos Alvarado chose her to be Costa Rica's ambassador to Spain in 2018. An ambassador is a top official who represents their home country in another nation.
Her Main Goals as a Politician
As a politician, Ana Helena Chacón has been a strong voice for fairness and equality. She has focused on making sure all people are treated with respect and have the chance to live a good life.
Supporting Human Rights
Chacón believes in protecting the rights of every person. She has worked on issues like helping young people, protecting families from violence, and reducing poverty. She believes that with good government, it's possible to end extreme poverty in Costa Rica.
She has also been a strong supporter of LGBT rights. In 2015, she joined a public parade to show her support for the equal treatment of all people, no matter who they love.
A Voice for Women
Chacón has often spoken about the importance of supporting women. She felt that the president before her, Laura Chinchilla, had not done enough to focus on women's issues. Chacón believes that women in leadership should use their position to help other women.
She has fought for women to have more choices in their healthcare and family planning. She believes that supporting women helps create stronger families and communities for everyone.
