Ana Porgras (born December 18, 1993) is a former Romanian artistic gymnast. She is famous for her elegant style. Ana won a gold medal on the balance beam at the 2010 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. She also earned a bronze medal on the uneven bars at the 2009 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. In 2011, she received the Longines Prize for Elegance for her beautiful performances.

Ana's Early Gymnastics Journey

Ana Porgras started gymnastics in her hometown of Galați. Her first coaches were Agripina and Paul Gâlea. Later, she joined the Romanian Junior National Team. She had a very successful junior career, winning many medals.

At the 2008 Junior European Championships, Ana won a gold medal on the balance beam. She also placed ninth in the all-around competition. Towards the end of her junior career, she had to have knee surgery. This was to fix a problem with a ligament.

Ana's Senior Gymnastics Career

2009: A Strong Start

Ana was still recovering from her knee surgery. Because of this, she could not compete at the 2009 European Championships. However, she made a great start to her senior career at the 2009 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in London.

Ana qualified very well for the finals. She was first on balance beam and second in the all-around. She also qualified third on floor and seventh on uneven bars. During the finals, she had some falls on the balance beam. This stopped her from winning medals in the all-around and beam events. She finished seventh in both.

But Ana did win a bronze medal on the uneven bars! She tied with American gymnast Rebecca Bross. She also tied for fifth place with Rebecca Bross on floor. Later that year, Ana won another gold medal on balance beam at the DTB Cup in Stuttgart. In October 2009, Ana received a special medal in Bucharest. This was to honor her achievements at the 2009 World Championships.

2010: World Champion!

Ana continued to face challenges with injuries in 2010. She was part of the team at the 2010 European Women's Artistic Gymnastics Championships. She helped her team qualify in second place. She competed on balance beam and uneven bars.

Individually, she qualified first on beam and seventh on bars. Her team won the bronze medal. Ana got the highest score of the day on beam (14.800). She also scored 13.700 on uneven bars. During the team finals, Ana got injured during her balance beam dismount. This meant she had to miss the beam and uneven bars finals. When she returned to Romania, doctors found a small crack in her right fibula bone.

In September, Ana made a great comeback at the Ghent World Cup. She won the gold medal on balance beam. She also won a silver medal on uneven bars. One week later, she won her all-around title again at the Romanian Gymnastics National Championships. She also won gold on balance beam and bronze on floor.

In October, Ana was chosen for the national team for the 2010 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Rotterdam. Here, she helped her team finish fourth in the team finals. She performed on beam, floor, and uneven bars. Individually, she placed fifth in the all-around and on uneven bars. Most importantly, she won the gold medal on balance beam! She beat Rebecca Bross and the previous champion, Deng Linlin. Ana was the first Romanian woman to win a world championship since Andreea Răducan in 2001.

2011: More Success and Retirement

In April 2011, Ana competed at the 2011 European Artistic Gymnastics Championships. She only competed on beam and uneven bars. She did not make it to the finals. However, in August 2011, she performed well at the Romanian National Championships. She won her third all-around national title in a row!

After good performances at two friendly competitions, Ana was chosen for the team for the 2011 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. On the qualification day, she had some small mistakes. She grabbed the beam on her switch ring and fell on her uneven bars dismount. This meant she did not make the event finals.

However, in the team finals, she helped Romania finish fourth. She got the highest scores for her team on beam (15.300) and uneven bars (14.066). In the all-around final, she performed well. But she placed sixth because of small errors on floor and a lower difficulty score on her vault. In 2011, she was awarded one of the two Longines Prize for Elegance awards.

In January 2012, Ana injured her elbow during training. She announced her retirement from gymnastics. This was only seven months before the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England.
