Deng Linlin (simplified Chinese: 邓琳琳; traditional Chinese: 鄧琳琳; pinyin: Dèng Línlín; born April 21, 1992) is a Chinese retired gymnast. She was a key member of the Chinese gymnastics team. Deng won a team gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. She is also a three-time World Cup gold medalist. Deng Linlin's Gymnastics Journey
Deng Linlin started her gymnastics training in Fuyang, Anhui, China. Her family moved there in 1998. She first attended the Anhui Fuyang Sports School. Later, she went to the Anhui Provincial Sports School. In 2004, she was chosen to join the Chinese national team.
Starting International Competitions in 2008
Deng Linlin first competed internationally in 2008. She took part in several World Cup events. In March, at a World Cup event in Doha, she won a gold medal on the balance beam. She also placed second on the floor exercise. At another World Cup event in Moscow, Deng won gold medals on both the balance beam and floor.
At the 2008 Chinese National Championships, Deng finished third in the all-around competition. She also placed third on the vault.
Deng Linlin at the 2008 Beijing Olympics
Deng was part of the Chinese team at the 2008 Olympic Games. She competed in the first rounds and the team final. In the first round, Deng performed on all four gymnastics tools. She was ranked ninth overall. However, only two gymnasts from each country could compete in the individual all-around final. This meant Deng could not advance to that final.
For the team final, the Chinese coaches decided to have Deng perform on the vault. She did very well on three events in the team final. She landed a difficult double twisting Yurchenko vault. She also performed strongly on the balance beam and floor exercise. Deng was one of only two Chinese gymnasts to compete on three events in the team final.
Deng Linlin, along with her teammates, was featured in a documentary. It was about preparing for the Beijing Olympics. The film was called Dream Weavers: Beijing 2008.
Becoming a World Champion in 2009
In 2009, after recovering from a knee injury, Deng prepared for the 11th Chinese National Games. She surprised everyone by winning the gold medal in the all-around final. She performed well on the uneven bars, beam, and floor. She also landed a clean double twisting Yurchenko vault. This helped her secure the win. In the floor final, she earned a bronze medal.
Later that same month, Deng became the world champion on the balance beam in London. She had the highest difficulty and execution scores in the beam final. She became the fourth Chinese gymnast to win a world title on the balance beam. She also finished seventh on the floor exercise.
Continuing Success in 2010
Deng faced challenges with a back injury in 2010. This meant she could only compete on vault and beam. Despite this, she continued to succeed internationally. At the 2010 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, she won a team bronze medal with the Chinese team. She also earned an individual silver medal in the balance beam final.
Deng was also chosen to compete in the 2010 Asian Games. There, she won a gold medal with her team. She also took home an individual silver medal on the balance beam.
Overcoming Injuries in 2011
In 2011, Deng could not join the team for the World Championships in Tokyo because of an injury. However, in November, she won an all-around title at the Chinese Winner Champions event in Hong Kong. During this competition, she performed a very difficult series of moves on the balance beam.
Preparing for the 2012 Olympics
In 2012, even with injuries, Deng worked hard to regain her skills. She was able to perform a double twisting Yurchenko vault again. This skill was very important for the Chinese team. By winning the all-around title at the Chinese National Championships, Deng earned a spot on the Chinese gymnastics team for the 2012 Olympic Games.

After finishing sixth in the individual all-around final, Deng bounced back. She won the gold medal in the women's balance beam event. She had the highest scores for both difficulty and execution in the final. Her score was higher than her teammate Sui Lu, who was the reigning world champion. This was Deng's second Olympic gymnastics gold medal. It was also China's second Olympic balance beam gold medal.
