Deng Linlin (simplified Chinese: 邓琳琳; traditional Chinese: 鄧琳琳; pinyin: Dèng Línlín; born April 21, 1992) is a Chinese retired gymnast. She was part of the Chinese team that won the gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Deng Linlin also won three gold medals at World Cup events. She became the World Champion on the balance beam in 2009 and the Olympic champion on balance beam in 2012.

Deng Linlin's Gymnastics Journey

Deng Linlin started her gymnastics training in Fuyang, Anhui. Her family moved there in 1998. She first trained at the Anhui Fuyang Sports School. Later, she went to the Anhui Provincial Sports School. In 2004, she was chosen to join the Chinese national team.

Early International Competitions (2008)

Deng Linlin first competed internationally in 2008. She took part in several World Cup events. In March, at the World Cup in Doha, she won a gold medal on the balance beam. She also earned a silver medal on the floor exercise. At another World Cup event in Moscow, Deng won gold medals on both the beam and floor.

At the 2008 Chinese National Championships, Deng finished third in the all-around competition. She also placed third on the vault.

Competing at the 2008 Beijing Olympics

Deng Linlin was a member of the Chinese gymnastics team at the 2008 Olympic Games. She competed in the first rounds and the team final. In the first round, she performed on all four gymnastics events. She was ranked ninth overall. However, only two gymnasts from each country could compete in the individual all-around final. This meant Deng did not advance to that final.

For the team final, the Chinese coaches made a last-minute change. They decided Deng would perform on vault instead of another teammate. Deng did very well on three events in the team final. She landed a difficult double twisting Yurchenko vault. She also performed strongly on the balance beam and floor exercise. Her scores helped the Chinese team win the gold medal.

Deng Linlin was also featured in a documentary film. It was about the journey to the Beijing Olympics. The film was called Dream Weavers: Beijing 2008.

World Champion on Balance Beam (2009)

In 2009, Deng Linlin recovered from a knee injury. She then prepared for the 11th Chinese National Games. She surprised many by winning the gold medal in the all-around final. She performed well on bars, beam, and floor. She also landed a clean double twisting Yurchenko vault. This helped her secure the win. She also won a bronze medal in the floor final.

Later that same month, she became the world champion on balance beam in London. She had the highest difficulty and execution scores in the beam final. She was the fourth Chinese gymnast to win a world title on the balance beam. She also finished seventh on floor exercise.

Overcoming Injuries and Medals (2010)

Deng Linlin faced challenges with a sciatic injury in 2010. This meant she could only compete on vault and beam. Despite this, she continued to succeed internationally. At the 2010 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, she won a team bronze medal with the Chinese team. She also earned an individual silver medal in the balance beam final. She had the highest difficulty score among all competitors in that final.

She also competed at the 2010 Asian Games. There, she won a gold medal with her team. She also took home an individual silver medal on the balance beam. Her teammate, Sui Lu, won the gold in that event.

Continued Success (2011)

In 2011, Deng Linlin did not make the team for the World Championships due to injury. However, in November, she won an all-around title. This was at the Chinese Winner Champions event in Hong Kong. During this competition, she performed a very difficult series of moves on the balance beam. It included a layout full and a Korbut flip. This series had a very high value.

Road to the 2012 London Olympics (2012)

By 2012, Deng Linlin had recovered enough to perform a double twisting Yurchenko vault again. This was important for the Chinese team. She won the all-around title at the Chinese National Championships. This secured her spot on the Chinese gymnastics team for the 2012 Olympic Games. She was chosen as the fourth member of the team.

Winning Gold at the 2012 London Olympics

Deng Linlin was the captain of the Chinese team at the 2012 Summer Olympics. She helped her team qualify in third place. She also qualified for the all-around final and the balance beam final. The Chinese team finished fourth in the team final. Deng Linlin had a fall from the balance beam during this final.

However, she bounced back in the individual all-around final, finishing sixth. Then, she won the gold medal in the women's balance beam final. Her score of 15.600 was the highest beam score in the entire Olympics. She had the highest scores for both difficulty and execution. Her score was higher than her teammate Sui Lu, who was the reigning world champion. This was Deng Linlin's second Olympic gymnastics gold medal. It was also China's second Olympic balance beam gold medal.
